Carbon Offsets

  • CREST and The Monteverde Institute are partnering with the Climate Change Alliance program (ACC) – a Costa Rican social enterprise – in order to minimize the conference’s carbon footprint. ACC is pursuing its mission – “taking action against climate change” – by planting tens of thousands of native trees in Costa Rica, other Central American countries, and the Dominican Republic.  The program is backed by the Control Union Certifications and the National University of Costa Rica.  They are working to support more ecological forms of transportation, certification programs for businesses, and promoting carbon offsets for tourism.
    • CREST and the Monteverde Institute will calculate and offset the carbon footprint of the conference venues and local transportation through a contribution to ACC. Conference participants are encouraged to use ACC (or another company or NGO of your choice) to offset the greenhouse gas emissions of their travel to the conference. You can offset your travel when you register for the conference, (click here for details) or at the special ACC table when you check in for the conference on July 20 at the Hotel Ramada Herradura.
    • Check out ACC’s website to learn more!

    • In addition, while in Monteverde, participants and their family members can, in conjunction with the Costa Rican Conservation Foundation www.fccmonteverde.org/reforest.html, make a donation and participate in a tree planting activity.  This reforestation project is located on the Pacific slope, an area that has been adversely affected by rapid human development and farming.
