Monteverde Community Fund

A destination-wide travelers' philanthropy program, supporting innovative, constructive solutions to the environmental, social and economic challenges of the Monteverde region

An example of Monteverde's stunning biodiversity.

The Monteverde Travelers’ Philanthropy Initiative is a destination-wide Traveler’s Philanthropy initiative designed to equitably channel financial resources from the tourism sector to the local community and natural environment in Monteverde.

This mountain region of northwest Costa Rica encompasses a unique set of environmental, political and socio-economic factors. A successful conservation campaign led by local residents and visiting scientists through the 1990s resulted in the largest complex of private reserves in Central America. Local environs, including unique and threatened cloud forests, draw visitors from all over the world, making tourism the region’s principal economic activity. The initiative is currently working with local businesses, community-leaders and development institutions to generate funding for locally identified environmental conservation and sustainable development projects. In doing so, the program seeks to support more responsible and sustainable practices among visitors and local tourism enterprises.

Our services focus on the needs and challenges prioritized by the community through participatory processes. During the 2013-2015 period, the Monteverde Community Fund is refining its financial and technical services to best support the following initiatives.

  • Three-wattled Bellbird Biological Corridor, a multi-institutional effort to connect critical habitat between Monteverde and the Gulf of Nicoya, protect natural resources and contribute to the well-being of local communities.
  • Monteverde Human Development Plan, a participatory process facilitated in part by the local municipal government and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) where residents in each sub-community defined their priorities for community improvement between 2010 and 2020.
  • Monteverde Chamber of Tourism's Strategic Plan, a planning process where business, non-profit and public sector representatives specified strategies for establishing Monteverde as a sustainable tourism destination.
